The Fort Mill community had cause for celebration today as Wells Fargo Home Mortgage broke ground for its second new office building in this Upstate community. The new three-story facility, located in the Lakemont Business Park, will add approximately 170,000 square feet to the Wells Fargo campus. Projected completion is spring 2004. According to Wells Fargo Executive Vice President for Servicing Operations Bob Caruso, the new building is designed to accommodate the company’s projected expansion in the Palmetto State. “Clearly the new building will give us greater flexibility to support our growth,” said Caruso. “We expect to add a number of new jobs over a five-year period and we need space to house these future team members.” The new building will include space for 1,000 employees, with Wells Fargo occupying the entire building. Currently the building will house employees who will be consolidated from other locations. In total, the project represents an investment of $26 million and creation of 1,000 new jobs in South Carolina, according to South Carolina Department of Commerce Spokesperson Clare Morris. In addition to the groundbreaking, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage also dedicated its two-story 170,000 square-foot building in Fort Mill that was completed summer 2002. “Wells Fargo Home Mortgage has the option of locating anywhere in the world. We are thrilled that they have chosen South Carolina,” said Secretary of Commerce Bob Faith at the groundbreaking ceremony. “The company’s innovation over the past 150 years—going from stagecoaches to Internet banking—is a true success story.” Mike Short, York County Council Chairman who was also present at the event, said that his county has adopted aggressive policies to attract new jobs to the area. “The addition of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage to our business community will create economic opportunity for the entire region. As we continue to diversify our local economy, more companies will see the inherent advantages of a York County location,” Short explained. Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, Inc. is a leading originator and servicer of residential mortgages. Company headquarters are in Des Moines, Iowa. A subsidiary of Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC), Wells Fargo Mortgage serves all 50 states through the leading mortgage lending network in the country, with a presence in more than 1,800 mortgage and Wells Fargo bank stores as well as on the Internet.
