Research Symposium Showcases Bright Minds on March 26

A convergence of great minds – researchers, scholars and creatives – will occur when the sixth annual SC Upstate Research Symposium is held at Milliken & Company on Friday, March 26, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

“The purpose of the SC Upstate Research Symposium is two-fold,” said Dr. Sebastian van Delden, associate professor of computer science and director of research support at USC Upstate. “One is to spark collaborations between the different schools, which are not research-focused schools. Another goal of the event is to promote interaction between colleges and the community, stimulating grant writing and other research-oriented partnerships.”

This free symposium series provides a forum for faculty, students, and community representatives throughout the Upstate to interact with each other, to share information and expertise, and to nurture future research collaborations. The program will feature presentations, posters, and tutorials contributed by faculty and students from numerous disciplines at University of South Carolina Upstate, Converse College, Wofford College, Presbyterian College, Limestone College, Sherman College, Winthrop University, Spartanburg Community College, Lander University, Spartanburg Methodist College, and Southern Wesleyan University. The Best Student Presentation, Poster, and Paper will be recognized with the student scholars receiving award certificates and prizes. A new addition to the symposium this year is the Creative Performances session, which will include original dance, theatre, music, and digital media performances from Converse College and USC Upstate faculty and students. High schools award winners from the Piedmont Regional III Science Fair have also been invited to present their posters at the symposium.

Gary Hyman, CEO of the Orthopaedic Research Foundation of the Carolinas, will deliver the keynote address during lunch. Following Hyman’s presentation a student awards ceremony will be held. The primary sponsors of the event are the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, Spartanburg Regional Foundation, and Milliken & Company. Several academic institutions that contributed financially to the symposium include USC Upstate, Converse College, Wofford College, Spartanburg Community College, and Spartanburg Methodist College.
