Based on the idea that we learn best when the learning is relevant, imaginative and engaging, this event and exhibition promises to provide something for visitors of all ages. On hand will be numerous members of the 501st Legion and Rebel Legion, the worlds' premier Star Wars costuming group as they portray stormtroopers, clonetroopers, TIE pilots, Imperial guards, bike scouts, and other popular characters from the films. To add to the adventure, children 12 and under are invited to wear their own costumes as well. Through interactive displays created by students and faculty of spartanburg County Schools, guests will become immersed in science, history, and other cultures as they explore that famous galaxy far, far away. Through the Science Center, numerous activities will draw parallels between George Lucas' fantasy world and that of our own. You might try your hand at operating your own robot at the "Mission to Mars" table or find out how a mag-lev train and hovercraft works. Compare the similarities between the fighter crafts of Star Wars' galactic battles and our fighter jets and helicopters flown by Earth's modern-day heroes. Beyond science and technology, visitors will learn how the Star Wars saga compares to ancient myths from around the world as they seek to answer the question, "What is a hero?" Furthermore, there will be displays that reveal the real-world influences upon this fictional universe, from the films of the American western to the history of the Roman Empire. In the Hall of Health a display of cutting edge prosthetic devices is being provided by Prosthetic Care of spartanburg. Star Wars fans will see how modern medical marvels compare to those worn by Darth Vader. A splendid time is guaranteed for all as the world of Star Wars is topping the bill. The mission of the Roper Mountain Science Center is to educate and inspire learners of all ages to explore and investigate the world of science and technology.
